Chapter 1: The Birthday Gift
Ruby’s
tenth birthday was the most exciting day she could remember. A colourful mountain of presents sat in the
living room, their shiny paper reflecting the light of the late afternoon sun.
But Ruby’s eyes were drawn to just one gift—a large, ornate box that sat on the
dining table, tied with a ribbon the colour of blood.
Her
grandmother had brought it, arriving unexpectedly just as the party was about
to begin. Grandma Rose was a mysterious figure, a woman who rarely visited and
often spoke in whispers as if sharing secrets with the wind. She handed the box
to Ruby with a knowing smile, her fingers lingering for just a moment on the
lid.
“This,”
Grandma Rose had said, “is a special gift, Ruby. It’s been in our family for a
long, long time. I think you’re finally old enough to have it.”
Ruby’s
hands trembled as she untied the ribbon and lifted the lid. Inside was the most
beautiful doll she had ever seen. It was a porcelain doll, with delicate
features and dark, glassy eyes that seemed almost real. Its hair was a cascade
of golden curls, and its dress was made of lace, faded slightly from age but still
elegant.
“It’s
perfect,” Ruby breathed, hardly believing that this lovely creature was hers to
keep.
Her
parents exchanged a glance, but they said nothing as Ruby pulled the doll from
its box and hugged it tightly. It felt cold against her skin, almost as if it
had been left outside in the chill, but she didn’t mind. It was her dream
doll—the one she had always wanted.
“Thank
you, Grandma,” Ruby said, but when she looked up, her grandmother was already
gone, slipping quietly out the door without a word.
That
night, Ruby placed the doll carefully on the chair beside her bed, making sure
it was in the perfect position to watch over her while she slept. She didn’t
notice the way its head tilted ever so slightly, as if nodding in approval, nor
did she hear the soft whisper of her name as she drifted into sleep.
But the
doll did.
